NFL Conference Championship Picks

My picks were 2-2 once again last week; at 49-44, my slide into mediocrity is almost complete. Even worse, I lack conviction on any of these picks. I will fire away and hope for the best. Check back in two weeks for a pick on the Super Bowl, as well as a review of the more bizarre proposition bets.

Green Bay vs. New York Giants over 41 points: Purely a contrarian pick, as most degenerates assume the weather will impede the scoring.

San Diego +14 at New England: The Pats haven't covered with the ease they displayed early in the season. I still think they will win, but it will be tougher than most think. I also like the over 47 points total.

NFL Divisional Picks

My picks went 2-2 last week, making me 47-42 for the season. I was so depressed, I forgot to take the over in both games Saturday. I'll throw a few out there today.

New York Giants +7.5 at Dallas: Sure, the Cowboys are better, but their two best players are nicked up. I think it will be enough for the Giants to hang around. I also like the over 46.5 points total.

Indianapolis -9 vs San Diego: Few have noticed, but the Colts are better than they were last year. The Chargers are dangerous but erratic, and Peyton Manning will extract an exquisite price for every mistake they make. I will also take the over 45.5 points total.

NFL Wild Card Picfks

My picks went 1-4 last week. They should have been 2-3, but though I was set to take the over on the Steelers-Ravens game, I inexplicably took Pittsburgh when I posted the entry. I was livid when I realized the error, far too late to change it. I could not possibly make that error in a sports book.

Nevertheless, as Bill Parcells says, "you are what your record says you are." My record says I am 45-40 for the season. Due to the house's edge, this is only one game better than break-even. I am not exactly on a roll entering the playoffs, traditionally my weakest part of the season. But my keyboard still works, which means I will keep making picks.

Jacksonville at Pittsburgh over 39.5 points: A contrarian pick. Two good defenses give up more than anyone thinks they should.

Seattle -3.5 vs. Washington: The Redskins' dramatic run after the murder of safety Sean Taylor will come to an end. The long travel after a short week, the loud crowd, the weather, the Seahawks...it will all be too much, in the end, for them to handle.

Tennessee +10 at San Diego: Do I think the Titans will win this game? Heavens, no. They are just too good a defense to be spotted ten points it what will likely be a low-scoring game.

New York Giants at Tampa Bay over 39.5 points: Both teams' defenses are actually pretty good against the run, and can rush the quarterback. However, they can be beaten over the top, and there will be enough big plays to send this game over the number.
